Interview Date: July, 2026

Customer Overview

Founded in 1937, Presque Isle Electric & Gas Co-op (PIE&G) is a member-owned, not-for-profit electric and natural gas cooperative serving more than 30,000 members across nine counties in northeast Michigan. PIE&G maintains nearly 5,000 miles of electric line and roughly 570 miles of gas pipeline, and is one of the largest employers in Presque Isle County. As a member-regulated cooperative, PIE&G is committed to providing reliable, affordable energy and increasingly, broadband to the rural communities it serves. Learn more at pieg.com.

Greg Fedie manages GIS systems for PIE&G, supporting the cooperative’s electric and gas distribution mapping and asset management.

Challenge

PIE&G needed to deploy ArcGIS Enterprise on-premises, standing up both production and development environments but had no prior in-house experience with an Enterprise deployment. Early research into the certificate and licensing requirements convinced Greg that a misconfigured deployment could be costly and difficult to unwind later.

Key pressures included:

  • First-time ArcGIS Enterprise deployment, with no internal precedent to build on

  • Need for separate, properly architected production and development servers

  • Complex SSL/TLS certificate and licensing requirements

  • Other vendors contacted for quotes were slow to respond,  or never responded at all

Rather than risk a do-it-yourself deployment, PIE&G’s leadership made the call to bring in outside expertise and get the foundation right the first time.

Solution

PIE&G engaged Equinox Geospatial, with initial conversations beginning in October 2025 and the Enterprise deployment completed and installed by January 2026. The engagement included:

  • Architecture and deployment of separate production and development ArcGIS Enterprise environments

  • End-to-end guidance through all required SSL/TLS certificates

  • Fast, responsive support throughout setup. Equinox was consistently ahead of PIE&G’s questions, not the other way around

  • An ongoing server health monitoring plan following go-live

Customer Voice

There were multiple other companies I reached out to for a quote, and it took them either a week or they just never responded back. With John, he responded within fifteen to twenty minutes of my initial email. That's where it kind of took off in my mind. His customer service is what really stands out to me with everything."

Impact

Equinox helped PIE&G stand up a properly architected ArcGIS Enterprise environment and the relationship built confidence that has carried well past go-live:

  • Production and development environments live within months of first contact (October conversations to a January go-live)

  • Began publishing services the day after deployment - described by Greg as a “turnkey solution” with no extended ramp-up

  • Fastest response time of any vendor evaluated - 15–20 minutes, versus a week or no response from others

  • Ongoing peace of mind through proactive server health monitoring

  • Greg now refers Equinox to other GIS contacts across the electric cooperative community for ArcGIS Enterprise deployments and general GIS questions
